I'm a Chinese-Canadian-American who was watching martial arts fantasies and speculative-fiction TV shows and movies as soon as I was old enough to understand them. You could say I nursed on magic and imagination, but these shows and movies also germinated my love for science.
At the University of British Columbia, where I met my spouse, I took numerous science and math classes, studying linguistics/speech science and climatology.
A brief summary of my entire life (short on words, rich in experiences):
Birth - Hong Kong
Youth - Vancouver
Current residence - southern Indiana
Influences - Star Trek, first moon landing, and the magical Chinese stories of my early years
Writes - picture books, middle grade, young adult, adult; nonfiction, general fiction, and speculative fiction
Loves - food, sleep, food (wait, have I mentioned food?), physics (and science in general), conservation/environmentalism, birding
Hates - drama, drama queens, parties (especially parties with drama/drama queens and without food), and selfish people
Mentored by - Jane Yolen, We Need Diverse Books, 2017

Psssst... Top-secret info about me, shared only with you and the 6 other people who read this far:
1) I spent a summer performing gonadectomies on rodents. Take that as you will.
2) I once wanted to be an opera singer for a hot minute (or a hot 2 years).
3) In 1987, I was offered a job with Environment Canada, a sponsorship for the Miss Hong Kong pageant, and a lecturer position for a university in Hong Kong. I didn't take any of those, and I don't know which I regret more. (Okay, it's the second. I regret not saying yes to that one the most.)
4) My husband has far more clothes and shoes than I do, like maybe 4-5 times as many!
5) I appeared on television (as an audience member) when I was 5 years old.
6) I've been an amateur astronomer since 1979; my first ever magazine subscription was to Astronomy magazine in 1980.
